(TSX / STATS) -- DETROIT -- The Washington Capitals were in search of secondary scoring. Both the Capitals and the Detroit Red Wings were seeking a win.

In one night, the Capitals found everything they were looking for, and the frustration continued to mount for the Red Wings.

Alex Ovechkin scored on the power play 1:56 into overtime to give the Capitals a 4-3 victory over the Red Wings.

Pens edge Panthers on Sheary's late goal

(TSX / STATS) -- SUNRISE, Fla. -- Conor Sheary said he felt the Pittsburgh Penguins were in "vacation mode" during Friday night's first period, falling behind by two goals.

After that, though, the Penguins put away the beach towels and played more like the team they are -- the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions -- in rallying to beat the Florida Panthers 4-3 at the BB&T Center.

Ducks D Fowler leaves with knee injury

(TSX / STATS) -- ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Anaheim Ducks defensemen Cam Fowler, who missed the opening round of last season's playoffs with a right knee injury, appeared to be favoring the same knee after absorbing a hit and going into the boards in the first period of a game against the Montreal Canadiens on Friday night.

Fowler, who signed an eight-year, $52-million contract extension this offseason, skated off the ice with the help of teammates and did not return. He has teamed with Josh Manson to form Anaheim's stop defensive pairing.

Wheeler scores 200th, Jets hold off Wild

(TSX / STATS) -- WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- The Winnipeg Jets shook off the disappointment of having a goal waved off for goaltender interference and kept their focus to defeat the Minnesota Wild 4-3 on Friday night at Bell MTS Place.

Jets captain Blake Wheeler scored the winner with less than seven minutes to play in the third period, finishing off a saucer pass from left winger Kyle Connor and deking Devan Dubnyk from in close. His first goal of the season was also the 200th of Wheeler's career.

Jones stops 28 as Sharks blank Devils

(TSX / STATS) -- NEWARK, N.J.--The visiting San Jose Sharks looked fresh and fast while the host New Jersey Devils appeared tired and a bit sluggish Friday night at the Prudential Center. The result backed that up as the Sharks shut out the Devils 3-0.

The previous evening, the Devils (6-2-0) rallied for a 5-4 overtime victory over the Senators before flying home from Ottawa. The Sharks (3-3-0), meanwhile, were resting in New Jersey, helping to explain Friday's narrative.

Detroit, Athanasiou agree on 1-year deal

(TSX / STATS) -- The Detroit Red Wings agreed in principle to a one-year deal with restricted free-agent forward Andreas Athanasiou on Friday.

The deal, for $1.3875 million, will not become official until the Red Wings clear enough cap space to fit Athanasiou in.

Dorsett's 2 goals lift Canucks by Sabres

(TSX / STATS) -- BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Jake Virtanen didn't watch a replay of Vancouver's game-winning goal against the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night, and he doesn't plan on watching it anytime soon.

"I didn't take a look up at the video but we'll take any of those any day for sure," Virtanen said with a smile.

Bruins D McQuaid sidelined for 2 months

(TSX / STATS) -- The Boston Bruins added a name to their injury list on Friday when they announced that defenseman Adam McQuaid will miss the next eight weeks while recovering from a broken leg.

McQuaid suffered the break to his right fibula during Thursday night's win over the Vancouver Canucks when he blocked two shots during the same shift.

Jackets' Jenner returns from back injury

(TSX / STATS) -- The Columbus Blue Jackets activated forwards Boone Jenner and Sam Vigneault off injured reserve on Friday.

To make room on the active roster, the Jackets assigned Vigneault and forward Markus Hannikainen to the Cleveland Monsters of the American Hockey League.

Canucks D Gudbranson suspended 1 game

(TSX / STATS) -- The NHL suspended Vancouver Canucks defenseman Erik Gudbranson one game without pay on Friday for his hit on Boston Bruins forward Frank Vatrano on Thursday.

As a result, Gudbranson will miss Friday's game against the Buffalo Sabres.
