'Nova-WVU highlights Day 2 of Sweet 16

Loyola-Chicago and its game-planning nun are headed to the Elite Eight. So too are Kansas State, Florida State and Michigan in this maddest of Marches.

Day 2 of the Sweet 16 has Villanova's Jalen Brunson vs. West Virginia's Jevon Carter, Duke's athletes trying to solve Syracuse's zone and the arm brace saga of Purdue's Isaac Haas. Oh, and all those athletes between Kansas and Clemson.

No wonder sports fans love this time of the year so much.


Townes' 3 at 6.3 sends Loyola to Elite 8

ATLANTA (AP) With Loyola-Chicago's captivating NCAA Tournament run hanging in the balance, it was Marques Townes' turn to deliver another memorable finish.

Townes had scored only a combined 15 points in Loyola's first two NCAA Tournament games, but that didn't concern Ramblers coach Porter Moser. Townes had the ball in front of the Loyola bench in the final seconds Thursday night and the shot clock about to expire.


Florida St. stuns Gonzaga, Michigan next

LOS ANGELES (AP) Terance Mann grabbed the basketball with both hands and screamed, relishing his turn to be the high-scoring hero while Florida State steadily pulled away from Gonzaga.

If he doesn't get the opportunity again, the junior guard will be just fine with it. These surprising Seminoles are thriving on balance, discipline and tremendous teamwork during an upset run that has stretched all the way to the brink of the Final Four.


Brown's layup gets Kansas St. to Elite 8

ATLANTA (AP) Barry Brown Jr. darted into the lane, blowing by everybody in blue, and delivered a rare burst of offense just in the nick of time.

He wasn't done, either.

Hurley says UConn dream, destination job

STORRS, Conn. (AP) Dan Hurley says he has landed at his dream coaching destination.

Hurley was introduced Friday as the University of Connecticut's 19th men's basketball coach, replacing Kevin Ollie, who was fired earlier this month amid an NCAA investigation and after a second consecutive losing season.


La Salle, Giannini part after 14 years

PHILADELPHIA (AP) La Salle split with basketball coach John Giannini on Friday following a 13-19 finish in his 14th season.

The school said in a statement the Explorers and the coach have "mutually agreed to part ways," and a search for a new coach has begun.


Miami's Brown declares, won't hire agent

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) Miami Hurricanes sophomore guard Bruce Brown Jr. has decided to declare for the NBA draft but won't retain an agent, leaving him the option of continuing his college career.

The school announced Brown's decision Thursday. Players have until April 22 to enter the draft and until June 11 to withdraw. The draft is June 21.
